An Experience of Prayer

An Experience of Prayer

By Denis Revi

As a young Marist religious I hear these words:

"The spiritual life is nourished and sustained by contemplation of the word of God. This heightens the awareness of the presence of the risen Jesus in the everyday life and work of Marists. His presence inspires them to make of their life an unceasing prayer"(SM Constitution No #118).

These words often reminded me of the need to pray in order to live a Christ-like life. Through the struggles and difficulties I have encounterd in my spiritual journey I have learnt 'to taste God' in different ways and have come to fall in love with prayer. My little secret is that I try to be faithful and persevere in my prayer life no matter what. When I feel downhearted I simply go back and try again.

Here at the Marist Seminary I am blessed with a wonderful community that meets every day for Eucharist and the Prayer of the Church. My community plays a very important role in my prayer life too. Apart from community prayer I have time to myself for private prayer, where I meditate on the Word of God, and pray the rosary. It is through this daily prayer I experience God's graciousness as I let myself open to His spirit of life and love to come and dwell in me.

A few years ago when I was discerning a vocation to religious life I realised that religious life is a life lived with others but grounded on prayer. When I look at prayer, it seems more difficult than what it is. Today my eyes wonder and marvel at its beauty and how I have come to fall in love with it. Over the last few years I have discovered that prayer has taught me a lot about who I am before my God and how God overwhelms me with his love each time I call on Him in prayer.
