A Day in the Life
A Day in the Life
Monday - Thursday
- 6.30am Private Meditation
- 7.15am Morning Prayer (divine office) and Mass
- 8.00am Breakfast
- 9.30am- 4.30pm This time is for Lectures at Good Shepherd College.
We have 12 contact hours a week. The rest of this time is spent studying, keeping up with designated jobs around the house, formation meetings, planning liturgies, going swimming or to the gym, perhaps praying the Rosary, and generally just keep the house running.
We also spend 3 hours a week in a pastoral assignment. Examples of Pastoral assignment are: working with children who have learning difficulties; helping in soup kitchens, working in Catholic schools, and a host of other activities in which we try in some small way to carry out the mission entrusted to the Society of Mary.
- 5.40pm Evening prayer
- 6.15pm Dinner
- 7.00- late
This time is given over to study, watching t.v, spiritual reading, community meetings, Marist life meetings, catching up with friends, and what ever else you might be interested in. For example one of our community is presently studying Maori once a week during this time. There is also the chance to meet for supper at 9.30pm if you want.
Friday
- 6.30am Private meditation
- 7.15am Faith sharing/scripture sharing.
This is where we meet as a community and share something of our faith or our response to a scripture passage. We try to speak personally and honestly during this sharing. It is a excellent way to build up community life and spirit as we try to live out our Marist vocation.
- 9.30am- 12.30pm Lectures at Good Shepherd College
- 12.35pm-1.15pm Good Shepherd College weekly Mass
- 1.15pm -2.00pm Lunch with Good Shepherd College Staff and Holy Cross seminary students
- 2.00pm-4.00pm House and Garden work
The rest of Friday is the same as Monday to Thursday.
Saturday
- 9.00am Mass
The rest of the day is our own, including getting our own meals
Sunday
- We are encouraged to attend Sunday Mass at our local Parish. We generally go to the Parish of the Sacred Heart in Ponsonby or to St Patrick's Cathedral.
- 12.00pm Meet for a Drink
- 12.30pm Main meal of the day
- 5.00pm Holy hour - one hour of adoration. We would see this as the beginning of the week again, as we prepare for the coming week of lectures and assignments. But from the end of Holy hour to when we retire to bed is our own time and we would get our own dinner.
Monthly Recollection
Once a month we have a recollection day on Sunday.
The day will usually start at 9.00am with a conference on a particular topic (often to do with Marist spirituality) and we are then encouraged to spend time in prayer and reflection on whatever topic is presented to us. The day is usually spent in silence, and the Blessed Sacrament is exposed until 5.00pm when we will finish the day with Mass.
After Mass we generally go up Ponsonby Road and have a meal together as a community.
